In early December, the Danish parliament passed a law that criminalizes the “inappropriate treatment of writings with significant importance for a recognized religious community.”

The bill received 94 votes in favor versus 77 votes against in the 179-member parliament, also known as the Folketing.

The law states that anyone who burns, tears or otherwise defiles writings with significant religious importance in public or in videos meant for widespread distribution can face a fine or up to two years in prison.
